Elk Pass
Elk Pass was one of the most intense, yet rewarding, first days of riding for my guests in Alberta’s backcountry. There’s a lot of elevation gain and some steep trails where you really learn to trust your four-legged pals the most. The payoff is lunch along this stunning pass.
On this trip, one of the guests brought a camera and managed to capture some beautiful shots, including this portrait of me that later inspired my very first self-portrait painting. Working on this piece brought back all those memories, the bright sunshine, the smell of fresh cowboy coffee brewing, and the sound of steaks sizzling over the little grills fire. It’s a moment that reminds me why I love painting these landscapes.
